Smithers June 27-29

Want to see some beautiful country?? Come here. Big green valleys surrounded by snow capped mountains. It is absolutely gorgeous here. It is hot here as well as the rest of B.C., so yesterday 28th we went site seeing to stay cool in the truck. We took Jack with us.  First up was Tyhee Lk. P.P. This is another nice camp ground, some sites have power but I think they were all taken. Lots of room and privacy. This was our second choice if we hadn't been able to get into the municipal site. Next was Twin Falls. I will let the photos speak for themselves.  As it was getting hot, I did not walk all the way up to the viewing platform and took this from a pick nick area. Still nice I thought. Closer up. These are from a road side pullout, the same waterfall, just a little farther away. You get to see the snow pack from here. Then we went to Moricetown to see the rapids. The Bulkley River flows through this narrow gorge. And out. The Municipal Park in Smithers I had an engine lig...

Ft. St. James June 25

Fort Saint James, what a cool spot. Not only is the town nice but the fort is very well done as well. This was the capital city of the Western Territories, B.C., Washington and Oregon. It sits on the end of, Ninety mile long, Stewart Lk., in the fir trading days that was important because the lakes and rivers were the main means of transport. Cottonwood park sits at the head of the lake, as you drive in you will see this. This is some info I stold off the internet. A ⅓ scale model of a Junkers W 34 plane awaits you in Cottonwood Park. This type of plane was designed and built in Germany around and after World War I, and was used locally in the late 1940s, when Fort St. James become an important float plane base, providing service to mining and forestry operations as well as trapping and hunting interests to the north. These aircraft were used by men such as Russ Baker, Grant McConnachie, Sheldon Luck, Pat Carey, and Merv Hesse, all of whom were instrumental in opening up t...

Beaumont Lk. June 23, 24.

From Purden Lk. to Beaumont is only a two and a half hour drive but we did have to stop at Costco for propane. They have diesel at the Costco but it was a zoo around there, so we bought it at the Husky for a bit more a liter. On our way to Beaumont the Garmin GPS started to act up. It is not new by any means, so the next morning we drove the hour and a half back to P George to buy a new one at London Drugs. If we had problems with it we can take it back to the London Drugs in Gibsons.  I have Nav. in the truck but we like to set each GPS at a different distance, that way we can see more detail around us and were the road leads up ahead. I think the new one will find places that the old maps in the truck can't. On our way back we drove through Vanderhoof, Fort Fraser and then to Fraser Lk. All neat tidy little towns, looks like they are doing well in spite of the past few months.  Fraser Lk. has a free, by donation campground on the lake, no services and they ask to limit...

Purden Lk. P.P. June 22

This was the longest drive so far, almost five hours. Good enough for one day. We did have a couple of stops, let Jack out to stretch his legs. Although he is not the most lovey cat, he sure is a good traveler.  Provincial Parks so far.  We have stayed in Paul Lk., Purden Lk. and now Beaumont Lk. We also looks at Thompson River and Pyramid. Pyramid is up the road to Wells Gray PP. They all are great, you could get any size rig into all of them. Lots of room and bush between sites. Very few people here mid week, they fill up on the weekends. Our trick so far is to show up Wed. and stay till Sun. They all have water and a dump. Paul Lk. had a boil water advisory. Prices so far are between $18:00 and $22:00. As expected, there are lots of mosquitoes up here. We had heard the Thermocell system is worked, so we bought a couple and so far are working great. They are not cheap to buy or run but they work. On to Beaumont PP

Wells Gray June 21

As promised, today was Wells Gray PP. We grabbed a couple of Subs for lunch and headed up to Clearwater Lk. It is 79 km from Clearwater town to the Lake. The pavement ends at Helmcken Falls at 49 km. They wet down the road with something to keep the dust down, so we got a a little dirty but its worth it. We went for a short hike in the campground, this creek emptying into the Clearwater River. Back down the road to Helmcken Falls. A short walk to the viewing area and your there. I have never seen that much water over the falls but we have never been here at this time of year before. It drops 141 meters to the canyon below. It is the forth highest waterfall in Canada. We ate our lunch at Dawson Falls. It was starting to get hot, so we decided to head back and make sure Jack did not get to hot closed up in the trailer. He was just fine but it did get very warm today, well over 30 deg.   Heading North again tomorrow, not to sure how far we will get but I think a little farther ...

Clearwater June 20

Image
We left Paul Lk. and headed for Clearwater, it is less than two hours drive. We decided to give the KOA a try, as we needed to do laundry and have some decent cell service. Banking, blog etc. Here is a photo of our site, I guess if we had a fire, we would be roasting our neighbors trailer. These places are not for us but they do serve a purpose. There are lots of pipe line workers staying here. The pipe line will be good for the economy in these small communitys. Off to do some exploring. Thompson River Provincial Park was one we have been wanting to check out. It does not disappoint, Very large private sites, there is still plenty of sun for the solar panels. You could get the biggest of rigs in this one. None of the sites are far from the river, the ones on the river are on the small size.   Tomorrow we are off to Wells Gray PP

Paul Lake June 15

Image
The most excitement this week was Tuesday, when I got my second COVID shot. My appointment was at 11:35 after that we hitched up and headed to the campsite below. This is Paul Lk. just out of Kamloops, we like it here but no cell service. While we are here, we will catch up with my sister in Kamloops and some friends that live here. Our friends showed up Thursday afternoon, it was great to catch up. They were our witness at our wedding. We drove some of the roads around Paul Lk this morning before we left for Chase. A couple of photos. Paul Lake Bluff Harper Mountain Friday we drive to Chase, so Pat can get her second shot. The first available date in Kamloops was June 29, we will be long gone from here by then. We will be taking the #5 North to Prince George, then as I said, turn left or right. Which way should we go. As our 4 year old grandson says, put your answers in the comments below.  I hope this does not sound to mixed up, as I am adding as we go.

Getting out of Dodge. Sunday June 13

Image
It’s a start, although we only got to The flying field in Cloverdale. I am going to do this blog but I suspect that posting will be very spotty. From what I can gather, there is limited cell service up North, I will post when I can.  Ryan was able to bring his trailer out to the field and we spent a great weekend with him Lam and Quinn.  We are going to hang out here till the 15th, then head for Kamloops for a few days. We still have not decided on the route North, we will have to make up our minds once we get to Prince George. What will it be, left or right. Please share this with anyone who you think will be interested,
