Heading North 2021

 When you leave Ft. St. John, on hwy 29, you drive through this beautiful valley. Then you see the construction and realize that once site C is complete, it will all be flooded. Seams like a shame, it is very pretty. The construction that we saw was to relocate the highway, as it will all be under water. There will be some very tall bridges on the new road. On through Chetwynd, a huge saw mill there, and many, many chain saw carvings, then down to Gwillim Lake. We get there and the sign on the hwy says campground full, rats, well lets go check it out and make sure that they didn't just forget to tale down the sign from the weekend. Sure enough, empty spots all over, picked a nice one and set up. For the last few days we have been seeing people having campfires, so when the attendant came around we asked him if the ban had been lifted and he said it had for that area.  More nice scenery, Stone Sheep and the twistiest road yet, my kind of road.  We stayed a couple of days in Ft. Nelson, another nice little town. The GGG RV park was home for our stay. Not a bad park but there are a lot of workers there that go to work starting at 5:30. When they just leave no problem but the ones that like to let their diesels warm up for an hour are ----. Laundry all done and groceries bought, we then headed for Buckinghorse River PP. It was so nice here and a long weekend, that we decided to stay for two days and three nights. The first photo shows where the river is from our site, forty or so feet. I tried fishing but all I had was a spoon that came with the little Walmart rod. It soon became apparent that was not what I needed to catch a Grayling. Again poor planning, I should have done some research on Arctic Grayling before I got there.  As the day started out a bit chilly, windy and cloudy, we decided to take a drive down to Toad River. I said in a passed post that I wanted to see a Caribou in the wild and thought that we were here at the wrong time of year. It looks like we were just in the wrong place. Just out side our campground I saw my first one. A female and calf. I have to say, that made my day. As we drove down the road, we came across this mama and her calf. Then we came across Folded Mountain. And then there was these handsome fellows. The young bull moose we saw on our way back. All in all, it was a great day for seeing wild life. Tomorrow, off to Ft.  Our original destination was Liard River Hot Springs PP. After driving up to the gate and seeing the six foot electrified bear fence and as we are not hot spring people, we decided to move on. Our drive from Watson Lake to here was great, again light traffic and very scenic. We passed six male Bison, all spaced out along the road, at least fifteen km between them. We expected to see the rest of the herd at some point but we never did. No Bison photos. We also passed a porcupine on the side of the road waiting to cross, which it did safely, after we passed.  Muncho Lake PP was our new destination. Just before we got there we came across these. This is not the sharpest photo, if I forget to shut my truck off, I get this vibration that the image stabilization in my camera can't overcome.  This will be our last night in the Yukon, we will be sad to go but we must move on. The Yukon is an amazing place, spectacular views, long days, cooler weather but mostly not too cold, decent roads and bugs. You do learn to deal with the bugs though.  We are very happy we made this trip, we would recommend it to anyone.  If you are worried about fuel economy, forget it. With the ups and downs and twists and turns it won't be good. I am averaging 12.5 US per mile combined and 9.5 pulling the trailer. One more thing on Haines Junction. We counted 8 RV Parks/Motels, 5 Gas stations, 6 restaurants and one liquor store. So what you say, well there is no grocery store, only the convenience store at the gas station. We pulled into a rest stop and a lady says to me, did you see the moose? I said no, where? She points through the bush to a small black blob on the other side of a lake.  Today we headed North, up as far as Burwash Landing. It is at the top end of Kluane Lake. At the south end of the lake is an Interpretive/Tourist Center. We stopped and got some good info on the area. Other than the polar ice caps, Kluane has the largest ice field in the world. It is also home to Canada's tallest mountain, Mt Logan. Mt. Logan is the second tallest mountain in North America, behind Denali. The third highest is in Mexico Pico de Orizaba. The only way to see Mt. Logan is by plane. We phoned an air tour company to book a flight but they never got back to us. By then it was to late to try another. Knowing that, I would call more in advance and multiple operators, if there is a next time. Even though we did not get to se e the big mountain, the others are still spectacular. A couple of shots.   The decision to leave Whitehorse was spot on. We are now at Pine lake YTP. This is another very nice park. I think if you were on the water loop, it might be party central but it is nice and quiet here, even with a bunch of kids down the way. Today we drove down the Highway towards Haines Alaska. This road is on the boarder of Kluane  Nat. Park. First stop Kathleen Lake. There is a Parks Canada campground there, it is $22 a night with no more services than the Yukon ones. I think the price includes the National Park Fee. There is a short walk on a board walk. Some photos from there. This is across the lake, it's called the Kings Throne. There is a trail up to it but to far for us. We drove down the hwy almost to the BC boarder. You go through BC for a short time before you get to Alaska. This is as far south as we went.
