Whitehorse July 20
Whitehorse did not turn out as we had expected. After leaving Teslin, we headed to a Yukon TP just outside of Whitehorse called Wolf Creek. It was full, so we decided to go to a full service site just outside of town. There were a few side trips we wanted to make from here, so we paid for three nights. It seems that we complain a lot about these parks but just trying to set an accurate picture of our trip. In order to maximize site space, they put the services every second site and they are for two campers back to back. That means that the front of our rig was facing the front of our neighbors. There was maybe 16 ft between our doors, so it was impossible to get any distance away from them. It wouldn't have been too bad but they were smokers and like to play their music loud. Pat asked them to turn it down at one point. I think they were in their mid sixties but were fairly new to camping. To cut a long story short, after two days we decided to pull the pin and head for a nice quiet Yukon TP. Sad to loose the $45 but very happy to be out of there.
The first day we got there, we headed downtown and found the Walmart and Canadian Tire. Stocked up on a few things, checked out the town and headed back to camp. If you like winters and being quite a ways from everything, this would be an awesome place to live. The town is very well laid out and have everything you would need for shopping. We liked it a lot.
The next day we drove down to Carcross. This drive makes a triangle from Whitehorse to Carcross then to Tagish and back to the Alcan at Jakes Corner which is about 81km back to Whitehorse.
Other than the beautiful mountains the first thing of note was Emerald Lake. From the internet.
The beautiful blue-green colour of Emerald Lake, which was once known as Rainbow Lake, is created by sunlight reflecting off a white layer of "marl" on the lake bed. Marl is a calcium carbonate clay that forms in the water and then settles onto the lake bottom. It forms when carbonate from the dissolving limestone reacts with calcium in the water. The limestone hills around the lake were created 150-200 million years ago by reef-building corals growing in a warm sea. Many other lakes in the Yukon have this colour, but very few are road-accessible.
The lighting at this time of the day made it difficult to show the lakes true beauty.
This is billed as the smallest dessert in the world. It was pretty cool though. This is another cool little town, lots of history and things to see. There has been flooding here recently and the water levels are still high. Carcross is on Tagish Lake.
On our return to Whitehorse, we did a little site seeing around town. There was a scenic drive, it takes you here. Miles Canyon
As you come down the hill towards town, there is a viewing area and walkway. There is an Eagles nest here, I, for some reason left my camera at the trailer so I did my best with Pat's phone. They have a nest camera on it.A shot looking towards town. The SS Klondike.
I am hoping on our way back to stop and check out this boat and the Air museum. We will see what happens.
Tomorrow Haynes Junction and Kluane Nat. Pk.
